Things to Do

Barton Springs & Zilker Park

Zilker Park is Austin's most well-loved park. Perfect for a picnic, people- and dog-watching, and stunning views of the skyline.

Barton Springs is a spring-fed municipal pool in Zilker Park. One of our favorites on a scorching hot day, the water is consistently around 65 degrees. Tickets to the pool are $9 per-person for the day. Note that Barton Springs is top-optional for all genders, so plan accordingly if visiting with family.

There are also spots for renting kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards on Ladybird Lake. We don't recommend swimming in the lake, but it's a neat way to watch the sun set.

Parking can be tricky at both Zilker and Barton Springs, so take an Uber.

See the South Congress Bats

A colony of Mexican free-tailed bats lives under the South Congress Bridge (right outside our wedding venue!), and they come out every evening to start their nighttime activities. Across Austin, the bats eat roughly 20-30 thousand pounds of insects on each night flight.

You can watch the bats come out each evening around dusk. Check the bat forecast to see what time the bats might make an appearance.

Esther's Follies

A great show of sketch comedy, magic and political satire. With massive windows that face 6th Street open to anybody who passes by, no two shows are the same. Shows are on Thursday & Friday nights.

It's an intimate theater, so we recommend getting tickets in advance.

Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center

If you've got a car, the trip to the Wildflower Center is worth the trip! Texas is notorious for its wildflowers, all of which are showcased here.

Tickets are $15. We recommend going early in the morning to beat the heat and the crowds.

University of Texas Campus

See where Emily and CJ first met!

UT's campus is just north of downtown. Aside from pretty campus buildings, there are a few museums that are worth a visit (if only for a break in the AC).

- Blanton Art Museum: notable for large-scale contemporary installations. Tickets are $15.

- Harry Ransom Center: rotating archival exhibitions, admission is free

- LBJ Presidential Library: tickets are $13

- The Engineering Education and Resource Center on the northeast side of campus is a fun building to visit. Its fishbowl style labs were built to expose engineering student work to the public... and engineering students to sunlight.

East Side Breweries

East Austin hosts a variety of breweries that all offer something a little bit different. Some of our favorites include:

- Blue Owl Brewing: sours!

- Lazarus Brewing: coffee, beer, and tacos

- Batch Craft Beer: also serving kolaches

- Austin Eastciders: CJ's favorite!

Peter Pan Minigolf

Local old-school style mini golf. Two 18-hole courses include characters painted by local artists and a giant T-Rex. And, it's BYOB!

Parking is tricky, Ubers are recommended.

$9 for one course, $12 for two.
